Last minute cancellations

Realizing that this is not an exacting science, and things happen...
What to do about last minute cancellations?
Iam a very low volume entertainer, who entertains more often outcall than in. Can we avoid cancellation expenses without causing inconvenience to all?
Any suggestions?

I can't imagine forking out for expenses without a deposit.

That said, sometimes I trust clients who I know and arrange to see them and they cancel very last minute, and that really puts me out. It makes much more sense to get deposits even from those you know.
